Crafting the Enchantment
Jenny Lynn’s approach wove together several key elements:
01
User-Centric Design: Extensive research into guest behaviors and preferences.
02
Operational Efficiency: Collaboration accross Disney teams, including product, tech, copy, consumer insights, analytics, quality assurance, marketing, art and animation, management, and executive leadership.
03
Technological Integration: Seamless app integration for a digital-first experience to mitigate wait times and elevate overall enjoyment at the park.
04
Ethical Considerations: Ensuring accessibility and inclusivity to provide each guest the ability to pre-book experiences and reduce on-the-ground stress.
The Lightning Lane Solution
Through iterative design and user testing, Weitz and a small product design team, which included Nick Brill as Product Design Manager, Sarah Burley as Lead Product Designer, Stephanie Valderrama as Senior Product Designer, and Jonalynn Chang and Ketesche Coachman as Product Designers, reimagined what was formerly known as Genie+ into:
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Providing access to most attractions in the park, offering a flexible way to skip the regular lines.
- The Lightning Lane Single Pass: Providing access to the most in-demand attractions that are not included in the Multi Pass.
Key Features:
- Ability to book attractions in advance
- Integration with My Disney Experience App’s existing digital ecosystem
- Dynamic pricing model to balance demand
- A more seamless and enjoyable guest journey
The enchanting outcomes included:
- 25% increase in guest satisfaction scores
- 15% improvement in park capacity utilization
- 10% boost in per-guest revenue
- Significant reduction in physical queue times
Key Insight: The Harmony of Structure and Spontaneity
Weitz discovered that by providing guests with more control over their schedule, it paradoxically increased their sense of freedom and spontaneity in the parks. This insight served as a foundational principle for subsequent Disney experience design products, and remains a cornerstone of Weitz’s product design philosophy.
Unlock Park Magic
Disney’s new Lightning Lane system offers several advantages for guests:
- Increased flexibility: The Multi Pass option allows you to choose up to three attractions in advance, giving you more control over your day.
- Potential time savings: By utilizing Lightning Lane, you can significantly reduce wait times for popular attractions, allowing you to experience more of the park.
- Enhanced planning: The ability to book Lightning Lane selections in advance helps you optimize your park visit and prioritize attractions.
- Option for single attraction access: If you only want to skip the line for one specific attraction, the Single Pass option provides a targeted solution.
- Dynamic pricing: While prices can fluctuate, the system may offer opportunities to find lower-priced options for less popular times or attractions.
